A recording of Brahms’ Intermezzo in B Minor, Op. 119 No. 1.
This piece takes me back to the late 1990s when I was a student at Victoria University (Wellington, New Zealand). I studied all four pieces of Op. 119 then, first with the late Judith Clark then subsequently Dr Thomas Hecht.
Fond memories! Well, for the most part. It’s easy, in hindsight, to forget how painfully difficult it was to learn, interpret, and control these pieces. A lot of growing-up happened thanks to them.
Today I see the struggle in performing these pieces as an inextricable part of the music itself. This is Brahms’ tortured heart bared in full; they shouldn’t be easy to play, and certainly shouldn’t sound that way either.
I will absolutely record the next three pieces too, in the very near future.
