Portrait of Michal Cihelka

I was born in the Czech Republic in 1979. Our family moved to New Zealand when I was three years old and I have been a proud Wellingtonian since.

I studied piano and music theory with Jocelyn Walker, a prominent Wellington teacher at the time, and subsequently with Judith Clark and Dr Thomas Hecht at Victoria University. I graduated with a Bachelor of Music (Hons.) degree, majoring in Piano Performance.

In the years that followed I pursued many other interests, including photography and computer programming, while freelancing as a pianist, accompanist, and piano teacher. During this time I recorded three albums – the For the Love of Piano series. I have also worked as a Photo Lab Technician, Court Reporter (transcribing evidence presented in Court), Data Analyst, and even Bakery Assistant!

In 2024 I returned to a singular focus on music, in particular performing and composing. Why? Two reasons…

I absolutely adore beautiful music. I am very fortunate to be able to create it, whether that be interpreting and performing existing works or composing and producing my own. I dearly wish to share what I love and believe in with others, so that they too can experience the joy, wonder, and fulfilment it brings.

And, the world needs it. Music, and more broadly the creative arts, is the light. In a world increasingly threatened by darkness, I feel compelled to play my part and share mine ☀️
