About this project
In this video I perform the gorgeous second movement of Shostakovich’s second Piano Concerto — with orchestra. Except, it’s not a real orchestra!
Some time ago, I set myself a challenge. Can I produce an orchestral backing track, for a movement of a piano concerto, using software tools, that is compelling, nuanced, has heart and soul, and is worthy of the music itself?
I believe that that challenge has been met, and I am very excited and proud to share the results of my efforts with you here, in this video.
The piano
The piano solo was recorded live and uncut, at Old St. Paul’s in the heart of Wellington, New Zealand. The piano is a quite old but lovely Steinway. Thank you to the wonderful staff at Old St. Paul’s for making the piano recording possible.
